A baseplate shim is an essential must-have for every foiler. I personally need it depending on the conditions, and it has completely changed and improved my foiling. A negative deck angle improves pumping massively, and during downwind runs it prevents the board from pitching up when the wave pushes from behind.
But as soon as I’m using a wing in my hands or when I’m kiting, I use a slightly positive deck angle so I don’t get the feeling that the wing is pulling me over the board. This gives me much more control. With this setup, I can use the same board in different conditions and always stay perfectly tuned.
If you struggle with pumpfoiling and can’t get up to speed or can’t pump for more than a few seconds, try a negative baseplate angle — you’ll easily be pumping for a minute or more.
Note: Some baseplates are not symmetrical and therefore have positive or negative markings. These always refer to the riding direction. Symmetrical baseplates are marked with +-.
ASA Carbon vs. ASA: ASA is a weather-resistant, UV-stable and highly durable engineering plastic that is ideal for long-lasting outdoor applications.
If you want the best of the beast and that little bit extra stiffness, go with ASA Carbon.

These are the original shims from Code Foils. If you want to get the absolute most out of your foil, choose ASA Carbon — otherwise regular ASA is perfectly sufficient. Especially with small tail wings, you won’t notice any difference.
